The challenges ahead for OCP

The concept of OCP is disruptive and it is not always a popular option with some of the incumbent IT manufacturers, because it does away with the idea of proprietary hardware, and locks a customer into closed and often costly contracts, which is obviously what they prefer. This is why many CEOs and CFOs will not even have heard OCP mentioned before. But, now is the time to start asking questions and ensuring your IT department (if you have one) are up to speed on OCP. While it might not be an option for every single company, there are certainly many firms out there that would benefit from the innovation and growth potential connected to OCP that they are currently missing out on. The fact is OCP is disruptive because it is going to impact a lot of service provider business models, as it is going to affect their bottom line because a large percentage of their revenue is based […]

Suitability Guide for OCP Ready Colo White Spaces

Open Compute (OCP) designs have already been implemented by the operators of Hyperscale Data Centers such as Facebook, Google and Rackspace and the large colos such as Equinix and many of the American banks, as they see the adoption of open source hardware as a way to accommodate for the high demand for their services. To help and encourage the colocation companies across the world to be ready for the demand from customers to house their OCP IT Gear in Open Racks the OCP Data Center project is to produce a document and checklist that will enable a colo vendor to compare their facility with the functional needs of Open Racks. These racks will most likely be delivered to the colo fully populated with server, storage, switches and power shelves to make the deployment that much easier and more environmentally friendly (minimal packing materials) as an added benefit. All of the sub systems in the Data Center white space will […]

Open Compute Project (OCP) Tech Update & Social Time

The Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP), the open source hardware community, holds regular meetups to discuss key initiatives within the data centre industry. Top OCP members share their learnings and best practices on implementing OCP and how best to leverage open hardware within your infrastructure. As an advocate of OCP, InflectionTech regularly participates in these events and in February it was held at Booking.com HQ in Amsterdam. Here InflectionTech Director, Mark Dansie held a workshop to discuss Deploying OCP in a Colocation Facility covering the recently published Colocation Guidelines. These guidelines were the result of diligent work done by the Data Centre project within OCP and outline what is needed within a facility to deploy and run OCP.
