What is the Open Compute Project?

The Open Compute Project (OCP) is a collaborative community focused on redesigning hardware technology to efficiently support the growing demands on computing infrastructure. OCP, whilst still in its infancy is gaining momentum and many big brands such as Nokia, Tencent, Google and Facebook are all championing this revolutionary movement. The four OCP technology principles With OCP there is a consistent drive for excellence to ensure a level of consistency in all technology contributions. These are: Efficiency OCP contributions must have an efficient design, whether this is thermal efficiency, reduction in costs/latencies or power delivery and conversion. Scale OCP contributions must be scalable, meaning the technology is designed with the right supporting features to allow for its maintenance in large scale deployments. Openness OCP contributions must be open and strive to comply with a set of already existing open interfaces, at the very least able to provide one. Impact OCP contributions must create meaningful positive impact within the OCP ecosystem. All […]

Humphry’s Cafe arrives at Highams Park

Congratulations to Humphry’s upon opening their cafe and community hub in The Highams Park today. The name Humphry’s was chosen in honour of Humphry Repton who originally landscaped the park and lake. The intention is that the cafe will be open seven days a week from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm and will provide much needed refreshment and toilet facilities for visitors to the beautiful park and lake. The Highams Park Planning Group (HPPG) undertook this project. At the launch of HPPG in 2014 a café and toilets in the park was the most popularly expressed wish of local residents.  HPPG approached the Council to see if they would agree for the community to take over the unused Council building in the park. After several years of negotiations the Council agreed to a ten year lease and in June 2017 planning permission was granted and work on the building started in earnest. The actual implementation of the project was achieved […]

Suitability Guide for OCP Ready Colo White Spaces

Open Compute (OCP) designs have already been implemented by the operators of Hyperscale Data Centers such as Facebook, Google and Rackspace and the large colos such as Equinix and many of the American banks, as they see the adoption of open source hardware as a way to accommodate for the high demand for their services. To help and encourage the colocation companies across the world to be ready for the demand from customers to house their OCP IT Gear in Open Racks the OCP Data Center project is to produce a document and checklist that will enable a colo vendor to compare their facility with the functional needs of Open Racks. These racks will most likely be delivered to the colo fully populated with server, storage, switches and power shelves to make the deployment that much easier and more environmentally friendly (minimal packing materials) as an added benefit. All of the sub systems in the Data Center white space will […]

DCD Awards 2017

Judging for the DCD Open Data Center Project Award

The DCD Awards recognise excellence in the data centre industry.  Each year experts in the data centre field come together to celebrate the evolution of technology across the sector. DCD are a different kind of awards which recognise great people and excellent projects in the data centre industry and help organisations share their experiences.  The awards were founded in 2006 and have grown exponentially to be THE awards to have a presence at on an annual basis. World leading brand such as Facebook, Visa, Microsoft, Toyota and Uber, to name a few, are all in attendance. InflectionTech director, Mark Dansie was delighted to be selected as one of this year’s judges for the The Open Data Center Project category, along with peers in the industry. The “Open” revolution, originally inspired at the software layer by the work of the Linux Foundation, OpenStack et al. and more recently at the hardware level by Open Compute, is empowering the industry to develop […]

OCP Summit 2017 Data Center Project Engineering Workshop

The OCP data center project team has been working on creating a suitability guide and quality checklist to assist colocation facilities and their tenants with understanding the requirements needed to enable the smooth and trouble free deployment of Open Racks in data centers. This talk by Mark Dansie covers some of the real world challenges that many colocation facilities will face when needing to take delivery of heavy pre-built Open Racks and an overview of the various sub systems, their attributes and the parameters that have been included in the check list.
